Make a Website

Build working websites — chat rooms, file sharing, video sites and more.

13 guides

This section covers building a working website from nothing — not a landing page, but sites that actually do something: chat rooms, file sharing, social networks, video hosting and online stores.

Where should you start?

It depends on one question: do you want to learn, or do you want it finished?

If you want it working this week, use existing software. NextCloud gives you a Google Drive replacement in an afternoon. WordPress with WooCommerce gives you a shop in a day. These are mature, free and maintained by thousands of people.

If you want to learn how it works, build the small version yourself first. A basic chat room is two database tables and a page that refreshes. You will understand far more, and you will know exactly what the ready-made version is doing for you.

What these projects actually cost

ProjectHosting neededMonthly cost
Chat roomShared hosting$3–5
Online storeShared, 2 GB RAM$5–10
File sharingVPS, 2 GB$10–15
Social networkVPS, 2–4 GB$10–20
Video hostingVPS, high bandwidth$20–150

Video is the one that surprises people. The software is free; the bandwidth is not. A 10-minute video watched 10,000 times uses about 1.5 TB, and that is where the bill comes from.

A sensible order

  1. Get hosting and a domain that suit the project, not the cheapest available
  2. Install a free SSL certificate before anything else — browsers now block camera, microphone and other features on plain HTTP
  3. Build the thing using one of the guides below
  4. Make it fast — compress images, add caching
  5. Make it findable — set up Search Console and write real page titles

Most people do these in reverse and then wonder why nothing works.

What is in this section

Every guide is written after actually running the steps, so each one includes the errors that come up and how to get past them. Where a simpler or cheaper option exists, it is named — even when it is not the one being taught.
